Chapter 18

That night I tried to get ahold of Clio, only for my calls to go to voicemail repeatedly. That was a first. I even took the Metro over to the townhouse, only to meet Euterpe at the door and find out Clio had left on an impromptu overnight trip with Janus.

Of course, that would be the case.

Euterpe promised to let Clio know I’d come looking for her as soon as she saw her next, but I wondered if it would be too late by then.

Trudging home, I found the apartment dark and empty. Corrina had left a curt note on the fridge letting me know she was staying with Matsuo for the night.

Needless to say, it felt like just when I needed help, everyone had disappeared.

The next morning, I woke up feeling out of sorts again and headed out. I grabbed a breakfast pastry from the local underground bakery, not having the energy to heat up anything.

Work was sluggish, but much to my relief, Jackson didn’t pester me at all. Even at lunch.

However, as soon as the clock hit five, I heard a knock at my door.

“Ready for our dinner date?”

I spun around and glared at Jackson. “This is not a dinner date. This is a business meeting. Did you get a reservation at The Old Ebbitt Grill?”

He nodded. “For six. Which means if we leave now, we’ll get there in plenty of time.”

“Fine.” I began packing up my stuff and shutting down my computer. As I grabbed my phone, it began buzzing, the name ‘Clio Cell’ lighting up on the screen. I gasped and answered it.

“Hi Dad!” I gestured for Jackson to move as I grabbed my items and turned off the light.

“Hi sweetheart!” Clio dropped her voice to sound more manly. It didn’t work. “How was work today?”

“Good, good. I’m just heading out with a few coworkers for a business planning meeting.”

“Does that have to do with your new boss?”

I nodded. “Yup. They’re changing things here, so we’re figuring out archives stuff. What the plans will be going forward.”

Clio paused, and I wondered if something had happened.

“Hello? Did I lose the connection, Dad?”

“Just for a moment.” This time, it was Janus’s voice and I relaxed slightly. At the very least, if Jackson overheard anything, it would sound like an actual man’s voice. “Did your boss say why you needed to go to the dinner? I thought you worked in a different department.”

“I do. But she and, uh, her assistant, Jackson, insisted I should come because I have some skills they think would help with forthcoming events.”

“That sounds nice, sweetheart. Where are you all headed?”

“The Old Ebbitt Grill. Right in the heart of downtown D.C.”

“Good to know. Anyway, I won’t keep you. Let me know how things go and I’ll talk to you soon.” Janus hung up and I glanced at Jackson with a shrug.

“My dad. You know how he is.”

Jackson laughed hesitantly from the other side of the car and gestured to my door. “It’s open. Let’s get going.
